How to postpone a sale in Union County

Union County publishes its terms, and they are unusually strict about how you ask:

• Two adjournments, 28 days eachPlus one more if the lender agrees to it. That is roughly two months, and it is yours by statute.
• $28 per adjournmentThe standard statutory fee.
• You have to come in personThe Sheriff’s Office states that an adjournment must be done in person by the defendant, and that identification is required. Not a phone call, not a letter from a relative.
• Not on Wednesday afternoonsAdjournments are not taken between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Wednesdays — which is exactly when sales are running. Do not plan to walk in the day of.

New Jersey law provides for up to five sheriff-sale adjournments under N.J.S.A. 2A:17-36 — up to five of up to 30 calendar days each — two at your request, two at the lender's, and one by mutual agreement. The $28 fee is set by N.J.S.A. 22A:4-8. How each county administers this varies, which is why the county details above matter.

What if the Union County sheriff sale already happened?

If your property has already been sold at sheriff's sale, don't assume there is nothing left to discuss. New Jersey has a limited post-sale redemption period, and depending on your circumstances, other legal rights or options may still need to be evaluated quickly.

Union County also moves its sale venue, which trips people up. The regular location is the Warinanco Ice Skating Center in Roselle, but certain 2026 dates were relocated to the Galloping Hill Golf Course in Kenilworth. Never assume the address from a notice printed weeks earlier.
