Facing a Foreclosure Sheriff Sale in Bergen County, NJ?

Bergen runs its foreclosure sales on Fridays at noon, in person, in the lobby conference room at 2 Bergen County Plaza in Hackensack, and I work out of Fort Lee, about fifteen minutes from that room.

How a Bergen County sheriff's sale works

New Jersey foreclosure law is the same in all twenty-one counties. The sale itself is not — each county sheriff sets its own schedule, its own location, its own adjournment procedures and its own deadlines. These are Bergen County's.

How to postpone a sale in Bergen County

Bergen County does not publish its adjournment procedure online. Both of the Sheriff’s Office foreclosure pages say only that a sale “may be postponed, canceled, or rescheduled” — there is no form to download and no posted deadline or fee. That is not a dead end, it just means the process runs by phone.

Call the Foreclosure Unit at (201) 336-3500 ext. 4453 and ask directly what they need from you and by when. Do it early in the week, not Friday morning. The unit closes for lunch Monday through Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30, and closes for an hour after sales end on Fridays.

New Jersey law provides for up to five sheriff-sale adjournments under N.J.S.A. 2A:17-36 — up to five of up to 30 calendar days each — two at your request, two at the lender's, and one by mutual agreement. The $28 fee is set by N.J.S.A. 22A:4-8. How each county administers this varies, which is why the county details above matter.

What if the Bergen County sheriff sale already happened?

If your property has already been sold at sheriff's sale, don't assume there is nothing left to discuss. New Jersey has a limited post-sale redemption period, and depending on your circumstances, other legal rights or options may still need to be evaluated quickly.

My office is in Fort Lee, which means Bergen County is not a market I read about — it is the one I drive through every day. If you want someone to sit at your kitchen table in Teaneck or Hackensack or Englewood and go through your paperwork with you this week, that is a short drive, not a project.

Questions people actually ask

My sale is on a Friday. When do I actually need to act by?
Earlier than Thursday. Bergen doesn’t publish an adjournment cutoff, and other counties nearby cut off requests at noon or 2 p.m. on the day of sale — so assume the window closes before you think it does. Call the Foreclosure Unit at the start of the week.
Do I have to be out of the house the day of the sale?
No. A sheriff’s sale transfers ownership; it does not put you on the sidewalk that afternoon. Bergen County’s own materials confirm a 10-calendar-day window after the sale in which the property may still be redeemed, and after that a new owner still has to go through a separate legal process to obtain possession. That is not a reason to relax — those deadlines are short and unforgiving — but you are not being evicted on Friday.
Is my Bergen County sale listed publicly?
Yes. Bergen posts every scheduled sale on the state’s shared portal, updated each morning. You can look up your own address there and see the date, the upset price, and whether it has been adjourned.
